New York New York Is In What County

New York City, specifically the borough of Manhattan where much of what people associate with "New York" is located, doesn't operate under the same county structure as many other US cities. While New York State is divided into counties, New York City is made up of five boroughs that function independently of traditional county governments. These boroughs are:

  • Manhattan
  • Brooklyn
  • Queens
  • The Bronx
  • Staten Island

Each borough serves as a county-equivalent in terms of administrative and judicial functions. For example, Brooklyn is also Kings County, Queens is Queens County, the Bronx is Bronx County, and Staten Island is Richmond County. Manhattan, however, is simply Manhattan County and is not commonly referred to by its county name.

Therefore, while the notion of "counties" applies to New York State, the City of New York itself transcends the typical county structure. The boroughs serve a similar function but operate within the unique governmental framework of the city.
